Conceptual Lighting for the Detroit Shoreway

The goal of this conceptual design is to create a luminous nighttime environment to attract patrons to the area and provide a feeling of safety in a better illuminated neighborhood. Examples of suggested building façade illumination can be seen on the renderings. Building entry ways will be illuminated to highlight the business; wall sconces may be integrated where appropriate. Buildings with canopies and awnings may have gooseneck decorative luminaires to highlight the awning also creating a splash of color against the dark sky. Additional building uplight is indicated with narrow beam spotlight luminaires to accent the structure but prevent stray light into windows and the night sky. Some of the buildings indicate an illuminated outline of the shape, while others provide an interesting opportunity for full wall grazing. Sources will likely vary from HID to LED depending on the application.
As The Cleveland Public Theatre is an evening destination, color may be used in drawing attention to this specific after-hours venue. The building has the potential for color grazing on the upper and lower portions of the building to bring vitality to the patrons’ eye.

Decorative HID light poles will replace the “cobra-head” roadway luminaires currently mounted on the utility poles. The smaller scale will provide a more pedestrian feel and improve illumination of the walkways. The pole spacing and distribution will allow roadway illumination as well. The luminaires shall be cut-off type to eliminate light trespass and the style would be similar to the decorative pole and lantern at Battery Park.
As small ornamental trees are added, we are recommending 2 ground mounted luminaires per tree to provide uplighting. A narrow beam is recommended to prevent extraneous glare and minimize sky glow. Sources may be ceramic metal halide or LED.
