Cleveland State University Rhodes Tower Data Center
Cleveland, Ohio

The Cleveland State University Data Center is located on the 10th floor of a 20 story administration high-rise consisting of offices and some classrooms. The project consists of the installation of new utility sources and a Multi Module UPS sized for at least 10 years of growth.

The existing conditions document the major concerns of no back-up generator and many stand alone UPS units. Our recommendations were to install a 3-module system with a N+1 design, allow provisions for future on-site generator and run new wiring overhead. Other issues addressed were the need for proper EPO and maintenance options.

The improvements to area included the asbestos abatement directly overhead of the computers, as well as, all new lighting and FPE panelboard replacements. The electrical design includes the replacement of 7 small APC units, a non-UPS powered PDU and the heavily loaded 50 KVA UPS.

The data center cooling design was condensed to the south half of the floor to accommodate 50 watts per sq. ft. utilizing precision Glycol media cooling units, strategically placed on the low height raised floor. The new data center is protected by a Dry Chemical suppression system, HFC-125, non-ozone depleting and computer friendly. Control of HVAC and fire alarming is brought to the new computer front ends, allowing full control and diagnosis of system conditions from the building’s main control room. The north half was converted into office space utilizing a conventional overhead HVAC system with perimeter hot water heating.

New security includes restricted access and camera monitoring were carefully specified by CSU’s Director of Security. Tec Inc provided the details for installation of hand scanners, proximity readers, keypads and all signaling devices. The project required specialized training for security system designers.
