Data Center for Private Healthcare Client
This private healthcare client operates redundant data centers on the East and West coasts of the United States. Tec Inc. completed the mechanical, electrical and plumbing engineering design for a major addition and renovation of the East Coast Data Center. The program includes a 40,000 square foot raised floor addition to the existing Data Center. The addition was designed at 30 watts per square foot and was later upgraded to 60 watts per square foot. The existing Data Center was updated with a building expansion project, UPS replacement project and power upgrade project. Redundancy for the Data Center is at Tier III with ice storage utilized for energy savings and water redundancy. This facility is a hot backup site for a Data Center located in California.
The security portion of this project provided the application of security technology and specifying the camera system. Security features include locking gates at the entry drive that required card access, intercom and gate control. All doors are monitored and controlled from the on-site security office and by remote sites approved by the client.
The data center central plant included three water cooled rotary chillers, three air cooled rotary chillers, cooling towers, ice storage tanks, primary pumps, secondary pumps, ice storage pumps, and cooling tower water pumps. The plant was configured to provide for redundancy in chiller capacity in any phase of operation. In each duty where pumps are used a standby pump was provided. Both the water-cooled and air-cooled chillers were capable of making ice. As configured the data center operates on ice during the day or peak demand hours and during off hours the chillers are operated to recharge the ice storage. The piping configuration allows any chiller combination to be operated alone or in conjunction with the ice storage. The design also allows maintenance to be performed on the central plant during normal working hours rather than schedule maintenance and service calls during nights and weekends.
